The origins of the band date back to December 1978 when "Silmarillion"
was formed by Mick Pointer and Doug Irvine out of the ashes of Aylesbury
band "Electric Gypsy". The other original members were Neil Cockle
and Martin Jenner, both of who quit in early August of '79 Former "Pegasus" and "Purple Haze"
guitarist Steve Rothery joined the remaining duo on August 19, 1979.
Keyboard player Brian Jelliman
was also added in August. It was around this time, that the 'Sil' was dropped from the
band's name due to legal concerns regarding the Tolkien book of the same
name. "Marillion" was officially born. Throughout this time period,
various rehearsals and some live appearances took place, mostly at the Grendon Underwood Village Hall in Buckinghamshire, England. Further details/dates
